60 x 60 cm
Acrylic on Canvas

This is part of a series of works titled “YOLO Man Waltzes Matilda”.
A look at the folk song Waltzing Matilda, its back stories and history as inspired by the new book by W Benjamin Lindner titled “Waltzing Matilda, Australia’s Accidental Anthem” published by Boolarong Press 2019.

The swagman in the song Waltzing Matilda can actually be named. He is Samuel (Frenchy) Hoffmesiter. Upon his death by suicide on September 5th 1894 a coronial inquest was performed on September 27th 1894. These are the first three pages of the inquest. YOLO Man who narrates this story has one leg bare, a nod to Paterson and his love of the outback or “never never”.
